Maserati 4CLT 1948 Tether Car
How This Remarkable Maserati 4CLT 1948 Tether Car Came Into My Possession
My introduction to this Maserati 4CLT 1948 Tether Car car began at the SAM35 Octoberfest swapmeet in 2023. While browsing the stalls, I was approached by Mr. John Hemmings — a long‑standing customer of mine and an enthusiastic reader of my Model Engine World Magazine. He had recently learned that I’d developed an interest in tether cars.
During our conversation, John produced an incomplete scale-model car body. It showed clear signs of age and wear, but it immediately caught my attention.Though at this time I knew nothing more about it.
We agreed on a straightforward exchange: one of my rarer engines for this rather sorry‑looking body. John went on to tell me that he had originally received it from an old friend, now in his nineties, who had owned the model from new.
What followed turned out to be a fascinating journey of discovery.

This is the start of a facinating project. Follow the links to see how it transformed into the pictures below

Maserati 4CLT 1948 I found the body incomplete for this car at the BMFA National centre Swapmeet in October 2023. It was made by Rex Hayes in 1949, and in very small number’s. This may well be the only survivor

I completed the car for the same event last October 2025. After a complex build with scale suspension and all round detailing.

The unique and special 5cc twin engine was made by Steve Fardon who now owns “John Oliver Model Engines”.

This car is so rare and fully detailed that it should probably be in a museum. I am a little scared to commit myself to a price? It might end up in a specialised auction by SAS. But for now if you have a genuine interest Lets start at around £12,000.
